Very Demure, Very Mindful: Tips for Mindful Tourism ARTICLE POSTED THU, 10 OCT 2024 Traveling is a delightful way to explore new cultures and meet interesting folks—but let’s keep it classy, shall we? Here’s how to travel mindfully, with a sprinkle of humor and a dash of decorum, just like a well-mannered traveler should. 1. Research Your Destination Before you jet off, spend some time studying your destination like it’s the finalexam you didn’t study for. Knowing local customs helps you fit in better than a tea bag in hot water—very cozy! 2. Choose Sustainable Accommodations Opt for eco-friendly hotels and charming guesthouses. Think of them as the “pashmina” of accommodations—soft on the environment and stylish for your conscience! 3. Use Public Transportation Swap the rental car for a bus or bike. It’s not just eco-friendly; it’s a chance to embrace the local vibe. Who knows? You might discover a quaint café that makes the best chai you’ve ever had—very nice! 4. Support Local Businesses Dining at local spots and shopping at markets isn’t just polite; it’s like giving a warm hug to the community. And who doesn’t love a good handmade souvenir? Very thoughtful! 5. Minimize Waste Pack your reusable bags and bottles. We’re on a mission to reduce waste, one stylish tote at a time. It’s the eco-chic way to travel—very sustainable, very mindful! 6. Practice Respectful Photography When taking photos, remember to ask first—nobody likes surprise photoshoots! Be respectful, because your followers will appreciate the thoughtful content—very considerate! 7. Engage with Local Communities Join local events and workshops. It’s the perfect way to connect—just be prepared for spontaneous dance-offs. It’s all in good fun and very cultural! 8. Slow Down and Be Present In this fast-paced world, take a moment to breathe and appreciate the beauty around you. Savor the little things—like that exquisite sunset. Very calming, very mindful! 9. Reflect on Your Experiences After your travels, take a moment to reflect on your adventures. What have you learned? What stories can you share? It’s all part of the journey—very insightful! 10. Leave No Trace Lastly, always leave places as beautiful as you found them. Follow “Leave No Trace” principles like the classy traveler you are—very respectful, very elegant! Mindful tourism is about enriching your journey and the communities you visit. Travel with grace, respect, and just the right amount of humor—because who said mindfulness couldn’t have a bit of fun? Happy travels, and remember to keep it very demure, very mindful!

How To Take The Perfect Selfie In Tokyo ARTICLE POSTED FRI, 15 MAY 2020 You would have thought that the selfie was an online fad waiting to die down by the time Chainsmokers released their earworm Let Me Take A #Selfie back in 2013 (yes, it’s been that long). Now, these vertical digital portraits are all over our social media accounts, but, technically, the self-portrait concept dates back to the first portable camera, Kodak Brownie, more than a century ago. And like the 13-year-old Russian Duchess sharing selfies with her friends in 1914, the Japanese have shared self-portraits with cat whiskers and neon hearts printed on the Purikura machines since the 1990s. If the arcade rooms blasting Japanese pop music with row after row of curtained passport photo booths seems a little scary, we selected the four best outdoor locations to capture yourself in the best (natural) light. Sensoji Temple The oldest, and one of the best-loved temples in Tokyo, Senso-ji is decorated in red and black tones with details of gold adorning the buildings and spires. Set in-between Nakamise shopping street in Tokyo’s Asakusa district , it’s split into two large entrance gates. The outer features a giant 700kg red lantern at the front gate, which is, inevitably, a must for photos (with people in them or not). And the inner leads to the temple itself. It’s also recommended to go during later hours for better selfies and less crowded angles. Where is it: 2 Chome-3-1 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan. View on Google Maps . Shinjuku Kabukicho, set in the heart of Shinjuku, is often seen in the background of people holidaying in Japan. Among the striking neon signs, highlights include orderly chaotic crossings, a monstrous Godzilla head, and the narrow bar streets of Golden Gai. Where is it: Shinjuku City, Tokyo 160-0021. View on Google Maps . Zojoji Temple Zojoji Temple has kept temple-goers spiritual for more than 600 years. While the temple looks humble in comparison to Senso-ji, the views of the Tokyo Tower in the background mean it’s a perfect location for that Instagram worthy self-portrait. When to go: 9am until 5pm Where is it: 4 Chome-7-35 Shibakoen, Minato City, Tokyo 105-0011. View on Google Maps . Red torii gates at the Hie shrine Still largely undiscovered by the mainstream visitors, Hie shrine sits in the Akasaka district adjacent to the Imperial Palace. Imagine the perfect frame for a selfie, like the 100 steps lined with bright red torii gates marked in black calligraphy. Compared in beauty only by the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto, it’s a perfect alternative if you don’t want to think outside the capital city. Where is it 2 Chome-10-5 Nagatacho, Chiyoda City, Tokyo 100-0014. View on Google Maps .

- Blog Where To Get Your Art In Quezon | Red Planet
Where To Get Your Art In Quezon City Article posted Tue, 19 Feb 2019 From velour jumpsuits in thrift shops to spicy lechon at habanero kitchen — here’s what Cubao Expo is, and what it isn’t. The first time we stepped into Quezon City’s Cubao Expo, we felt the time stopping, and then the nostalgia punched us in the face. The antique shops, speakeasies, and trendy restaurants provide a look into what Quezon City ’s young subcultures are like, giving you the perfect background for artsy photos to fill your Instagram feed. And if the many identical malls have left a vacuum in your search for popular culture and amazing food, step into this u-shaped utopia of memorabilia of the old: vinyl records, retro stuff and antiques, paintings, art, toys, and comic books. Or go for eats with family and friends — whether you prefer organic food, Italian cuisine, mouthwatering pastries, or like us, all-time favourite Filipino dishes. Below, we share six of the many spots for vintage appeal and fresh vibes at Cubao Expo. Grand Thrift House This home of artefacts, collectables, and memories is itself antique; it has been standing tall for over ten years. The Grand Thrift House is an enthralling (window)shopping experience for an odd-lot of school toys, gadgets, vintage cameras, and other old objects. The Four Strings “Bring your ukulele,” said no one ever (except Taylor Swift at her concerts). Make this forgotten instrument cool again, and learn to play one at Four Strings’ jamming sessions. Whether you’re a native Hawaiian or can’t differentiate one from a guitar, they will help you strum away. UVLA (Unique Vintage and Lost Art) and Studio Soup Gallery We’re in love with the charming, little store brimming with personality and carefully curated curios. They have time-worn tin and wooden toys, Pinoy komiks (the local equivalent to Marvel comic books), old records, vintage eyewear, patches, watches, etc. Climb up the stairs to the Studio Soup Library, a bistro and book collection that sells an impressive array of local and international indie zines, books, comics, and anything else printed. Kendo Creative A retail and event space that displays the work of local artists, craftspeople, and artisans. Join one of their popular workshops to learn more about the local crafts. The Habanero Kitchen Bar This Filipino-Italian dining room has the kind of casual, cosy feeling that we love — and it comes with a full bar. As you guessed from the name, habanero chilli is the fiery star in all of their dishes: like the habanero lechon, triple cheese pizza, baked oysters, pasta, sisig, and chicken wings. Dear readers, book a table; the place is usually packed. Fred’s Revolucion This enchanting place is a favourite hangout spot of the locals because of their frozen margaritas, chicken chops, and sausage curry. Fred’s Revolucion is such a welcoming place, and you want to book the biggest table and let loose with your friends. But drink responsibly. If your exploration of the antiques goes on until late, then Red Planet Aurora Boulevard has a good solution. You can walk from there, and find out what Cubao Expo is all about and why the bohemian urbanites go to meet up there.

The Dotted World Of Yayoi Kusama Article posted Wed, 06 Mar 2019 You’ve probably seen her repeating, brightly coloured polka dot patterns in high-end fashion and contemporary art biennales. She is all about pumpkins. A concurrent rival to Andy Warhol’s pop art, she has filled galleries and outdoor venues with vivid, hallucinating, mirrored pumpkin infinity rooms, pumpkin statues, and pumpkin paintings. And if you don’t know her name by now, she is one of today’s most influential modern artists. Yayoi Kusama (草間 彌生 Kusama Yayoi) was born on March 22nd 1929, and she created her first pumpkin art piece as a teenager. Fast forward to today, her style has matured, but the pumpkins have become a distinct part of her obsessional form of art. While being famous for sculptures and installations, she is also active in painting, performance, film, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other creative arts. And she has a museum hidden away in Tokyo’s Shinjuku neighbourhood. There are two exhibitions every year, and the next one, titled HERE, ANOTHER NIGHT COMES FROM TRILLIONS OF LIGHT YEARS AWAY: Eternal Infinity, opens from April 4th until August 31st. The 1,000 yen tickets are few and far between as they cannot be purchased at the door — but only on the museum’s website . Each ticket comes with a 90-minute admission time, and you can only enter during that designated time. Open Thursdays to Sundays and national holidays. Where You Need To Eat In Manila Article posted Mon, 28 Oct 2019 Finding good restaurants in Manila has never been a chore. You find sublime world cuisine at local prices. Fresh ingredients and innovative preparation are essential, with flavours that linger longer than the posts on your social media feed. Here’s where to eat just like that in Manila . Va Bene Pasta Deli It is no wonder why this Italian eatery from the Michelin-trained chef Massimo Veronesi is regarded as one of the best in Manila. The menu highlights fresh produce and is very pasta centric (one of the few places in Manila with 100% handmade pasta), but by no means is it just spaghetti. That means you’ll have plates like the molten egg yolk raviolo (an oversized ravioli), stuffed pasta with crab in saffron sauce, and creamy mushroom risotto with gorgonzola. Order anything off the menu and watch the streets of Makati slowly transform into marble-paved alleys of Verona. Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza When you get the pizza cravings in an unknown part of town, it pays to look for a big wood-fired pizza oven (or follow your nose to one). Nestled in the Salcedo Village, it has a typical Italian diner decor and a brick oven, as the name suggests, and sends out freshly baked pizzas at an impressive rate. Although the menu focuses on twenty-something different pizzas, Gino’s still has space for their in-house mozzarella bar and homemade cheeses made from the milk of local water buffaloes (carabaos). People have fun, wine flows, and food stands out — eating here is an authentic Italian experience. Donosti Something of a rarity in the city, Donosti is a real Basque eatery in Taguig. They have interior walls with stone cladding and handwritten daily specials on a chalkboard, and all that’s missing are the Iberico hams hung above the bar. The menu, from chef Pablo Lopez, takes in a range of Spanish favourites and Basque signature plates — think homemade sausages like butifarra, various pintxos, and fried-to-a-crispy-crust seafood paella. Toyo Eatery If Manila had a Michelin guide, Toyo Eatery would be in it, hands down. The kitchen, helmed by the inventive Jordy Navarra, an alumnus of Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck, celebrates the rediscovery of Filipino food. You might argue that a dish named garden vegetables has a place at the best restaurant in the Philippines (according to the World’s 50 best restaurants). But visit Toyo Eatery, and the answer is yes. Named after a famous nursery rhyme and the 18 vegetables mentioned in it, bahay kubo, the dish combines textures and flavours hidden in a humble bowl of edible soil. Claim your table good time ahead, and arrive hungry. Mamou Walk down the checkerboard floors of Mamou, and you find yourself in a cosy family-friendly bistro on BHS (Bonifacio High Street). With the right mix of local and international dishes, Lorenzo’s truffle cream pasta stands out. Smothered with truffle oil and topped with a mound of Grana Padano cheese, this pasta is one of Manila’s best comfort foods.
